China’s Prefabricated Modular Housing Exports Heat Up, Showcasing the Strength of “Smart Manufacturing” in the Global Market
In recent years, driven by the surging global demand for green buildings and the deepening of the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s modular housing industry has entered a golden period of overseas expansion. With core advantages such as customized design, efficient construction, and energy-saving performance, Chinese companies are breaking through international market barriers, with export orders continuing to grow rapidly.
Originally used mainly for construction site facilities, modular housing has now expanded into diverse applications, including cultural tourism resorts and high-end residential projects. It has become a new growth driver in China’s foreign trade sector, demonstrating the strong global competitiveness of “Made in China” evolving into “Smart Manufacturing in China.”
Behind this export boom lies the dual support of technological advancement and policy facilitation. At present, Chinese modular housing manufacturers have widely adopted a standardized model of “factory prefabrication + on-site assembly.” The application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology enables component precision at the millimeter level, while the increasing use of industrial robots has significantly improved both production efficiency and product quality.
Meanwhile, government policies have provided strong backing for companies going global. Measures such as special subsidies for green buildings and tariff reductions on imported equipment have been introduced. Customs authorities across the country have also established “green channels” and implemented facilitation measures like “advance declaration + direct loading upon arrival,” effectively shortening clearance times and reducing export costs.
In terms of market expansion, Chinese modular housing products have obtained international certifications such as CE and EN1090, enabling them to meet diverse building standards worldwide. Export destinations now include countries such as Russia, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, and Australia, covering key regions across Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
Leveraging logistics networks such as China-Europe freight trains and multimodal transport systems, the industry is achieving a stepwise upgrade from “product export” to “technology export” and ultimately to “standards export,” accelerating the transition from “Made in China” to “Smart Manufacturing in China.”
Industry experts believe that with the recovery of the global tourism market and increasing emphasis on green construction worldwide, international demand for modular housing will continue to rise. Chinese enterprises are now focusing on localized customization, optimizing their products according to different climates, cultural preferences, and usage needs. Looking ahead, more high-quality modular housing solutions from China are expected to enter the global market, further strengthening the international presence of “China Smart Manufacturing.”
